Building A Community In NFT Twitter
The recent mint of Skybrook, a project by Josh Bobrowsky, inspired this article.
First things first. I respect Josh, I like Josh, and I think it’s crucial to separate business from personal perspectives. I am speaking purely from a business perspective.
I wrestled since I first saw the details of the project on Twitter with writing this article.
Why?
There are a few things I know to be true. People often throw shade at people who are further along their journey of building what they want to build. So, I thought about this. Am I jealous? Am I just mad I didn’t do this? Or, is this simpler, and I honestly disagree with the strategy and want to express myself?
Ultimately, I needed to express myself and further cement my stance on these topics because I care about the community.
Fake Growth
I give Josh credit for moving away from Discord to build. This should be done more. The issue comes into play when you force people to subscribe + follow to enroll in the application to get a chance to mint based on a subjective opinion of a single person.
Here is what this essentially is saying
If you want the chance of potentially getting some free money, please do these things that cost nothing. Of course, the vanity metrics will skyrocket. You’re filling your “community” with people looking for a handout.
How does this age? Not well. There is hype, dopamine and excitement, but when that dissipates, nobody cares anymore. A new generation of bag holders was born on the mint day. And I hate to see it.
Lastly, I can’t imagine the open email rate will be very high after a few months. Trying to land partnerships with a 5% open rate will be challenging.
Healthy Growth
I wonder what it would look like if a founder decided to take a full year to launch their project—built their personal brand and community. And launched a project with a clear vision and mission for this built community. This, unfortunately, isn’t a standard in the space. It’s much easier to boost your metrics and “look” like a god.
To Be Clear
I feel so hostility towards Josh, and I think he’s a genuine guy with good intentions. He’s incredibly smart, well-spoken and thoughtful. This article is my perspective on the application process and boosting followers + newsletter subscriptions which never ends well.
